Guild Sale Rules and Quality Guidelines

All Sale items must be handmade by the participating artist. Every Sale item should be creative, original,
durable and MUST show good worksmanship, reflecting the BEST of our artistic abilities.
PARTICIPATION
- Only paid members of the Weavers' Guild of St. Louis are eligible to pre-jury and participate
in the Annual Guild Sale.
- A 20% commission will be paid to the Guild Sale Scholarship Fund by those who work 12 hours before or during the sale.
- A 50% commission will be paid to the Guild Sale Scholarship Fund by those who are unable to work on the sale.
- All sales are final. Any other arrangement is made between the artist and customer. The sales commission is non-refundable.
- There will be no baby-sitting or child care facilities at the sale.
- The Guild does not accept responsibility for items lost, stolen, or damaged at the Sale.
QUALITY
- All Sale items will be juried for quality. Provisions will be made for corrected problems to be re-juried and
returned to the Sale if acceptable to the jury committee.
- NEW artists and NEW items by returning artists must be pre-juried prior to the Guild Sale check-in.
- The jurors have the authority to reject inappropriate items at any time before or during the sale. Jury decisions
are final.
- No sale item can be previously worn, or used, or shown more than two years at the Sale.
- Stored items MUST be properly aired out. Any items with unpleasant or strong odors such as cigarette smoke, mothballs,
or anything heavily scented will be rejected.
- All WOVEN items MUST display appropriate fiber selection, sett, and beat with clean, even selvages.
Items are expected to display proper finishing techniques, such as pre-washing, ironing if necessary, and
well-constructed seams, hems, linings, and fringes.
- All HANDSPUN items MUST display proper twist, consistency, quality or fiber and finishing.
All yarns must be labeled with fiber content.
- All KNITTED items MUST display use of appropriate fibers and gauge, good technique (no knots on back),
and proper finishing (blocking and treatment of joins).
- All WALLHANGINGS MUST be ready to hang. Hanging methods, finishing, backing and construction are subject to
jury.
- All BASKETRY items MUST display appropriate construction techniques, with a tightly woven and stable structure,
with handles and/or feet securely attached and with proper finishing techniques.
- All JEWELRY items MUST display appropriate construction techniques as well as proper finishing. Overall integrity
of the piece must be acceptable.
- All SURFACE DESIGN pieces MUST display appropriate finishing techniques, ensuring that all dyes and pigments are
colorfast. Pieces MUST not look mass-produced and MUST exhibit an artistic treatment and design. All commercial
labels MUST be removed.
- All TAPESTRY items MUST display proper woven techniques as well as proper finishing and even selvages. Hanging
methods are subject to jury inspection.
- All PIECEWORK items MUST display creative expression in fiber and design as well as appropriate construction
and finishing techniques.
- All FELTED or FULLED items MUST have the appropriate integrity for the intended function of the finished product.
INVENTORY
- All items are to be tagged and ready for sale. NO finishing and tagging will be allowed at the Sale.
- Tags MUST be attached by needle with 10/2 pearl cotton or an equivalent like carpet warp. DO NOT use sewing thread.
- Tags are to be attached to lower edge of the left sleeve of garment; if the garment is sleeveless, they are to be
attached to bottom of arm opening of the left seam (on right facing you). Skirts should be tagged on top left side.
- All other garments should be tagged on the lower left side of the item (the right one facing you).
- Wallhangings should be tagged in such a way that the tag is accessible and readable.
- If items such as placemats are to be sold as a set, they should be attached together.
- Tags should be attached to jewelry and smaller items only on the end opposite the barcode. DO NOT glue, tape or
staple near the barcode. This end must be free to scan and detach.
- Be specific describing each item on the inventory sheet as this will help in hang tag descriptions. Please indicate
whether item is handwoven, handknit, machine knit, hand-dyed, handspun, etc. Be optimistic, but realistic when
filling out your inventory sheets. A maximum of 20 deletions would be appreciated.
- All items MUST have fiber content and care instructions on inventory sheets.
- All items to be donated to the Scholarship Fund should be labeled separately at the END of your inventory sheet.
