Soft Sculpture Articulated Doll Making Workshop

With Artist Sue Brown

Saturday & Sunday, January 24-25, 2009—10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Sue will be teaching a doll making technique that she learned at a workshop with Akira Blount at the John C. Campbell Folk School.  Her dolls are shown to best advantage in the book 500 Dolls. This workshop was paid for by the Weavers’ Guild of St. Louis through the guilds scholarship program.

In this class we will be using cloth doll construction to complete a doll in the two-day workshop.  Soft sculpture techniques using a needle and various other tools will be employed.  The doll will be jointed at shoulders and hips, have an expressive soft-sculptured face, and will be dressed in a wondrous array of silks, satins, batiks, or whatever your heart desires.  The techniques employed are not difficult, BUT some degree of sewing ability is involved - Can you hem a pair of pants
and not have it look like you hemmed them???

All supplies will be furnished by the instructor.  To facilitate completing the doll in two days, some of the sewing will be done by the instructor.  Full directions for making the doll on your own will, however, be provided.

Experience level: Minimal Sewing Machine experience required.

Workshop fees: Please make checks payable to the Weavers’ Guild of St. Louis.
