Lewis & Clark Handweavers Guild, Alton, IL
Missouri Fiber Artists

Guild Information

The guild is a not-for-profit group of contemporary textile artists. Founded in 1926, it is the second oldest fiber guild in the United States. Our membership ranges from the novice hobby weaver to the professional production weaver. The guild sponsors ongoing study groups in the areas such as spinning, tapestry weaving, knitting, color and dyeing, depending on the members' interests. Workshops and programs are scheduled each year to bring in fiber artists from outside the St. Louis area with expertise in color, design, weaving techniques, spinning, dyeing, basketry, and other subjects of interest to fiber folk. Guild members can sell and exhibit their work in the annual sale each fall. Proceeds from a special scholarship table at the sale support a fund used for educational purposes, such as full or partial scholarships for those interested in attending workshops and summer fiber schools as continuing education. Click on the Guild History link to see information about the guild's past years.  Questions about the guild should be addressed to Kaye Shumate, 314-822-8682.

Meetings

The guild meets monthly (except June and July) usually on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. in the Brentwood Community Center, Brentwood, Missouri. See map below for directions. There is also a night meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Weaving Department in the Myers House, 180 Dunn Rd., Florissant, Missouri, usually the same day as the daytime guild meeting. The May meeting is a picnic in a local park. Click on the Programs link to see the topics scheduled for each meeting.

Library

The guild library is housed in Luise Hoffman's home.  Call her to arrange to visit our large collection of books about the fiber arts, 314-727-5322.  Most magazines are primarily of historical interest and will be archived in the guild storage pod, which is opened once a year in November at the time of the guild sale. See the library catalog for more information about the items in our collection.

Member Survey

Information about our members' looms, spinning wheels, computers, and computer programs for weaving has been put into a database maintained by Marti Guntren. Members who have added or deleted equipment in the last two years should fill out a new survey form and mail to Marti Guntren, 300 West Pearl Street, Jerseyville, IL 62052. If you are looking for help with your equipment, this is a good resource.

Membership

Membership in the guild helps pay for our meeting place, speakers, newsletters, yearbooks, library acquisitions, and other guild responsibilities.  The annual membership fee is $25 for individuals and $35 for families.  Dues for the guild year, which runs from June 1 through May 31, are payable at the April meeting.  Dues become delinquent on June 30.  Membership forms can be printed from this link or can be requested from Jo Ann Treumann, 125 Jensen Hills Dr., Fenton, MO 63026.

Scholarship Information

The Weavers' Guild of St. Louis is a not-for-profit organization that sponsors lectures and workshops on weaving and related fiber arts areas and awards scholarships for short-term, in-depth continuing education in those fields. Each scholarship recipient then teaches, via a presentation to the Guild membership, what she or he has learned in the course of study. The education program of the Weavers' Guild of St. Louis is supported by proceeds from the annual sale. (last revised, December, 2001)
