for LOOM-CONTROLLED HANDWEAVING

This elegant “Black & White Fit-n-Flare Coat created by Liz Spear of Waynesville, NC received the Libbie Crawford Award for Loom-controlled Handweaving in the Fashion Show at the 2019 Midwest Weavers’ Conference held in Grinnell, Iowa.

This award-winning creation, designed and sewn by Liz, incorporates hand-woven fabrics made by three weavers: 1) Liz’s own solid black and natural fabrics woven in 2/2 twill on 8 shafts using cotton and rayon yarns; 2) Kathleen Weir-West’s black and white space-dyed fabrics woven in 4 and 8 shaft rosepath patterns; and 3) Rebecca Owen’s black and white cotton fabric woven in a 16 shaft plaited shadow weave pattern.

Liz, a former Midwesterner, enjoys connecting with her roots at Midwest Weavers’ Conferences where everyone sounds like her. She is also happy to be part of the Libbie Crawford world.
